Instagram stories let you share all the moments of your day in a more expressive manner. The feature enables you to upload and share multiple posts (videos and photos) that will appear together in a slideshow format. When you are uploading, you need to consider the dimensions for Instagram story like the aspect ratio, pixels, and height among others.
It allows you to add doodles and text to your posts as well – it works, pretty much the same as Snapchat stories.
How it works?

Your friend will get your message in his/her message inbox.

#3 Instagram Story Dimensions
After years of only standard square videos and images, the platform has opened up allowing landscape and portrait orientations as well. Understanding the dimensions of Instagram story is important especially for those who are using this social media platform to grow their business.
Abiding by the rules of dimensions of an Instagram story, repurposing content becomes a lot easier. The best part, with the added variety that the Instagram Story feature offers, it makes the content more interesting, appealing, and competitive.
So what are the dimensions of an Instagram story? The Instagram story dimensions are 1080 x 1920 pixels. In simple words, your video or photo should be 1080 pixels in breadth and 1920 pixels in height. 1080 x 1920 pixels is also known as the 9:16 aspect ratio.
The new Instagram story dimensions:
Instagram now offers three image/video orientations-
- Horizontal (landscape)
- Vertical (portrait)
These orientations provide a greater versatility in creating tempting Instagram stories.
3.1 Instagram Story Photo Dimensions:
The standard square image for Instagram story is 600 x 600 pixels. No alterations have been made to this over the years. You should note that although Instagram stories stores as large as 1080 x 1080 pixels, it still displays the maximum of 600 x 600 pixels for square photos.
We recommend creating an image that is a minimum of 1080 x 1080 pixels as this is the highest resolution asset that you can use on different social media platforms. On the other hand, with screens becoming higher in their pixel density, users will be advancing their photos from being too small.
For landscape Instagram stories, a 1920 x 1080 pixels image will be resized down to 600 x 337 pixels; and Instagram will store as 1080 x 607 pixels version. So it doesn’t matter the size of the image you choose, Instagram will automatically resize it to the maximum breadth of 1080 pixels and display it as 600 pixels.
Portrait photos will display at a maximum of 480 x 600 pixels and will be stored as a 1080 x 1350 pixels version on Instagram servers.
3.2 Instagram Story Video Dimensions:
#4 Why the Size of Instagram Story is Important
Dimensions of Instagram story are 1080 pixels wide and 1920 pixels in height. Photos and videos taken in portrait mode will be 1080 x 1920 pixels, while the dimensions of other modes will be automatically reformatted by Instagram to fit the portrait mode. This is called the 9:16 aspect ratio.
Most of the users think these predetermined dimensions being necessary. Yes, they are necessary.
If you don’t follow the Dimensions of Instagram story criteria, it will automatically reformat the actual image size to fit the required dimensions. Now, in case, if your picture is not 1080 x 1920 pixels, Instagram will zoom the image to fit the dimensions. In doing so, it will significantly lower the quality of your image along with cropping out the significant sides that will ultimately make your image look clumsy.
Another option Instagram gives is posting the image in its true format while leaving a blank space on the bottom and top. It not only shrinks the image but also makes it look off.
Simply putting, if you upload an image that fit the recommended Instagram story dimensions, it will not cause any kind of quality loss.
The bottom line is, in order to make your story look more authentic and best in every way possible, ensure that you are clicking pictures and recording videos in portrait (vertical) mode.
You can say that Instagram is moving in a vertical direction as its newly launched Instagram TV or IGTV only allow videos taken in portrait mode.
The 1080 pixels width and 1920 pixels height combination perfectly fit on your screen to give you the best possible resolution. However, this is not it. There are other dimension options when it comes to Instagram stories. For example, 720 x 1280 pixels is somewhat closer to the standard Instagram story dimensions. However, it will be a bit smaller but will have a fast upload time. Avoid trying anything smaller than that.
